Comment Spam is the Devil
Spammers seem to be shrewd programmers. After all, can YOU write a script that scours the Internet for pre-set keywords, finds blogs, and makes asinine comment posts? Didn’t think so.
So there, the credit is given where it’s due, but still … It’s highly frustrating to see your blog fill up with trash. It’s definitely an effort to moderate/delete comment spam, and it’s even more of an effort to implement an anti-spam solution. So being a lazy guy that I am, I worked out an easier solution: I went to my host and blocked out all spam IP addresses.
It seems like work, sure, but if you set up your shortcuts, it’s just a simple copy/paste job – copy the spam IP, paste it into IP Deny page (most Linux hosts with CPanel have it), and Submit.
After a few days you’ll have a bulletproof comment spam shield around your beloved blog – without relying on plugins (most are buggy, anyway).
It works like magic – comment spam abruptly stopped. My email notification is going off a little less frequent, though, and I’m debating whether it is such a good thing =)

You could add one of those image verification that person has to type whats in the image to be able to post in your blog. This will stop almost all the bots.

Hey, why has my IP been blocked and can’t I comment anymore? ;) They all get returned saying, “you”re the devil!”
