Mojitos in ATX
No, I don’t have pictures of my rental Malibu airborne with Nev and I inside it (too big of a production), but I did meet with him and had a drink or two. I’m compelled to describe some of the things I’ve walked away with after speaking with Nev. Of course, out of respect for him, I am not going to give any names or details.
My wife and I were hanging out in the downtown area, so I called him up. Within the half hour we were already sipping mojitos in an upscale-ish establishment on the 4th Street. We talked about some of his ventures, online biz, pf blogging, and the city of Austin.
He struck me as a genuinely nice guy. A nice guy with keen networking skills and business sense. I can imagine he’d appear even nicer had I met him at one of the fancy “networking” functions he frequents.
I understood why he’s not too hung up on religiously updating his blog – why do it when it’s only secondary to what he does for real money? I mean, here’s a guy in his 20’s with a college degree NOT looking for a job. Through proper networking, he found enough projects to sustain him (and then some) and completely eliminate the need to look for exactly the same daily grind I am looking for.
Yeah, I know, all of you are like “But what does he do? How does he make thousands of dollars without holding a job?”
Details about his business is not really what’s important here. It’s the idea-generating capabilities, using proper communication channels, finding the right people, and seeing a bigger picture. He’s unafraid of taking risks and failing because he’s not hung up on making a dollar a day when he legitimately could make $1,000 a day by implementing an idea or two.
He’s not one of those guys who wake up and immediately check how many people commented on his blog – who cares if someone else said “cool blog”, “keep blogging”, or even “you’ve just lost a reader”. By continuing to do what he’s been doing, there is not way in hell he could steadily crank out even $50 a day from AdSense on his blog. So why post eight times a day like some bloggers do? Does anyone really need to read Nev’s regurgitation of a CNN story five minutes after it appeared on CNN?
So what did I walk away with after meeting Nev?
- Work sucks. Any repetitive work is not worth it regardless of the compensation. That includes affiliate marketing. It makes sense because affiliate marketing is ten times more work that your ordinary 9 to 5.
- Any idea you think is good is worth implementing. Selling wooden compasses on the Internet may seem insane, but possible benefit vs. time-spent ratio justifies it. Creating cracked out Basement sites or very niche Mercedes sites may seem crazy, but it’s a good experiment in AM yielding a 1000% ROI.
- Exposure and networking is everything. Blogging about your cat or a CNN Money story will most likely not get you anywhere except for Stroke-Your-Ego-Land (and only when someone comments).
On that note, I’m going to pull my feet out of the Town Lake, go dry up, and get ready for a Tuesday on the Sixth Street. On Thursday, it’s back to chilly Michigan.

sounds like u had fun and didnt sock him in the face as I would have.
lol jk. Nev’s cool in my book.

Not that you’re fishing for comments or anything, but I enjoyed this post — and your blog in general.

Good post. Great to see the blogging allowing people of similar interests to actually meet in the flesh. You can actually call the blogging community a “community”.
