Basement Still Flooded, Updates, Thoughts

Filed under News — How To Be Poor @ 9:26 am

Can anyone explain this?

adsense_basement.jpg

It seems new projects all do that. At first, eCPM goes through the roof, then tapers off, and finally, dwindles down to nothing. Yeah, it’s nice to be paid over a buck-and-a-half per click, but it’s ain’t lasting long, folks. My 300SD site is bringing in maybe a dime per click. Any thoughts on this phenomenon?

Yesterday, I got paid for the final (fourth) wireless router from my eBay venture. The very final net profit was closer to $110 because I actually saved on shipping by using standard rate Priority Mail boxes. I don’t mind that the actual collection of the money takes a bit. It’s stupidly easy money.

So yeah, since about thirty of you went to BasementFlooded.com and started clicking on ads like madmen, the site paid for its domain in about two days. Lesson? Think of sweet domains and buy them. You will not lose money even if you park them and let them sit.

If you checked out the site, you had to notice the heading substitutions. I kind of went against the concept that really ugly websites sell, but it was a good practice in JavaScript and php. By the way, did you know that Plenty of Fish (corrected) is pulling a million in ad revenue every three months?

One million dollars and the site design looks like crap.

I am a firm believer that lean, plain html code is much better than any table-inside-table-inside-table-inside-table layout some designer might have dreamt up, but ten grand a day? Are you kiddng me?

On that note, I’m going to go to lunch and think of some more niches. I’ll keep you updated.

By the way, those reading my posts off a RSS feeder, you’re missing out on pretty nifty updates I do in the sidebar – revenue, announcements, etc.

  1. I don’t know if you MEANT to link to flentyoffish, but you did.

They make a bazillion dollars because the website makes it both easy (and motivating) to click OUT of it. The links are huge and easy to read; it offers a few basic categories to choose from, so you don’t have to overload your brain (and potentially close the window) to decide where you want to go, and the site’s so boring that you spend about two seconds there before you click on the first thing that catches your eye.

    Genius. Pure genius.

  2. Agreed. Still. 10K per day. Wow.

  3. I’m going to keep pretending the 10k per day figure is BS.

  6. Thanks for pointing out the sidebar. I’m curious about pfblog and affiliate revenue and what people actually make off their ad placements.

I have one site that makes a modest bit from adult advertising and was contemplating how much revenue dating sites generate for their affiliates… hmm. Might be something to try for your next experiment.

  7. Absolutely.

Ah, the sidebar. I leaped from .Net / ASP / VBA staright into php, which seems like a conbination of CSS and AutoIt. So I wrote a script that autototals my revenue, then divides individual revenues by the number of days since the site was started. It’s all interactive, and I believe, poses great interest to pf bloggers and AM people.

Everyone should post their revenue like I did :)
