Get-R-Done, the Crazy Catchphrase

Filed under Speaking Out — How To Be Poor @ 11:14 pm
Git-R-Done Decal Sticker CarI’ve noticed lately that being an “average Joe” entitles you to certain freedoms that people with high aspirations don’t normally have. Average-Joe-ism, so well depicted in the country music and Blue Collar Comedy tours, has snuck into the mainstream, enabling the individuals to a) be proud of being average b) propagate the mediocrity.

You may disagree with me on this one, but I view Larry the Cable Guy’s act as derivative, hokey, and most importantly, unfunny.

Be that as it may, his catch phrase “Get ‘er done” did strike a chord with the American proletariat. Its trashy-ass sexual undertones render it pretty ridiculous. I then started to see the phrase “Git-R-Done” plastered everywhere, from t-shirts to posters.

Though English is my second language, I speak it well enough for you to not realize I wasn’t born and raised in the States. However, once in a while I come across a gem like “Git-R-Done” and it stumps me because I don’t know how to read and understand it on an intuitive level. In that exact spelling, shouldn’t it be read “gitardon” or “git-are-done”?

Apparently, this average Joe here didn’t care about my battle with the semantics. He proudly displays “Git-R-Done” on his truck. If that wasn’t enough, he put “Got-R-Did” on the tailgate. Good job, man, that will really up the resale value. I didn’t take more pictures because the ower came out of Wal-Mart and started chasing after me.

  1. Hate that phrase. Sounds like ‘Get Her Done.’ Mysogynistic and a tad perverted.

  2. I’m from TX, so I’m use to this type of slang. Granted, it’s not exactly proper grammer, but it’s definitely a popular phrase. Just look at the buzz it’s created. Now it’s on people’s trucks?! No surprise. I’ve been reading through your blog. If you do intend on moving to TX, I suggest you get use to hearing Get-r-Done a hell of a lot. Texans definitely sound different from those in Michigan. Best of luck wherever you end up.
